Every drummer has their own snare drum sound, it’s one of the most expressive parts of the drum kit.
Once in awhile, the snare drum will create a buzz. It’s a simple problem that may have several “fixes”
1- Lighten the tuning at either side of the snares (on the snare or “bottom” of the drum). Other lugs may need to be tightened to adjust the tone.
2- Re-tune the top head of the snare drum to a slightly different tone or pitch.
3- Determine if the ringing is coming from a tom drum, if so- re-tune the tom to a different pitch, causing it to no longer ring in sympathy.
4. Apply tape to the drum at points. This is is the cause of much discussion among drummers. Some do, so don’t.
5. Do what works. Some purist will say never muffle drums. Depending on your circumstance this may or may not work. If you’re up against a time limit, a client needing a drum track etc. you can always use tape or any impromptu muffle in a pinch. Don’t worry, we’ll never tell!
